Mad About Cartoons

Bill Wray is trying to make the transition fine art but is known as a cartoonist, a background painter/ Art director and sometimes animation director. This will be the place he post his ocasional animation and cartooning work and also be a place to bitch or wax sentimentally about cartoons in general. It’s been a love and hate relationship for many years and the long journey may not be quite over.

Dexter

The Dexter's lab cover gig was one of my favorite things I did in comics. Here are a bunch of various sketches I did for them. I've also included a pencil spread for a completely penciled out Little Golden Book that was about finding Gerbils of all things. It never saw the light of day, do to golden books being sold or some Damn thing. I was kind of relieved do to the nature of the detail, painting them would have killed me.

I love your Dexter art. It's cool to see the "Lions and Tigers and Bears" pencil drawing for the cover you painted.

Hey Brian,

the shame is I would have painted all of them, but it was awlays a bit of a battle were the editor would have to plead for the budjet to do one.

These are wonderful; I don't feel like I can even express how good they are in words. You definitely have "the gift" for conveying emotion and expression.

Hey Leslie,

It's a shame there is no palce where I can express my cartoonig witout towing the corprate boat, thus the shift to fine arts at long last.

This is some cool stuff man! I'm reading about E.C. Comics right now and the fish one makes me laugh because it could be an E.C. spin on the Incredible Mr. Limpett. The dog show one is great too. The idea of Dexter is a pretty good playground for the imagination, it's cool to see yours messing around.

Hey Bill! Great stuff as usual.. I love that Dexter's Lab. BG (2nd down) with all the machinery and equipment. How much of that do you reference or do you draw it out of you head?

Hey Ryan,

It's hard to remember but I probably looked at cool books of machines or Russian constructivism? Maybe I cracked a Hugh Farris book out? I don't know, but I often immerse myself with inspirational reference for a job, if I really care about it. We are so lucky were have the internet now. What am I going to do with all my reference books?

oh ok man - yeah thanks for clearing up the confusion - i thought that you were doing a golden book related to gerbils exclusively - not in relation to dexter's lab - those coves are the best thing to ever happen to that comic!!! you rule!
